Bihu: The Festive Festival of Rhythm and Celebrations in Assam

In Assam, Bihu is similar to a huge celebration where everyone sings, dances, and has a good time. It resembles Assam's very own carnival of happiness, with the sound of drums, family laughter, and the aroma of delectable food evoking a joyful atmosphere. It's a moment when the state as a whole celebrates by dancing.

There are three separate festivals, each with its own lively vibes, instead of just one.

  • The Festival of Feasting, Bhogali Bihu

January is the month of Bhogali Bihu or Magh Bihu. Here's one that's all about fun and food.
People assemble around enormous bonfires known as "Mejis," feast on regional specialties, and celebrate. There's singing, games, and a lot of laughing.
  • Rongali Bihu: New Beginnings Festival

April is Rongali Bihu, the celebration of the Assamese New Year and the beginning of spring. Individuals make delectable desserts, tidy their homes, and put on fresh clothes. People are dancing a lot, swinging to the rhythm of the drums and belting out joyful, traditional tunes.

  • The Festival of Prayer, Kongali Bihu

October is when Kongali Bihu appears. It is somewhat more subdued in contrast to the other festivals. In order to keep pests away from the fields, people light earthen lamps and pray for a bountiful harvest. During Kongali Bihu, there is a feeling of serenity and optimism.

Bihu is more than just food and dancing. It's a time when friends get closer, families get together, and everyone appreciates how beautiful Assamese culture is. It's a happy festival that welcomes fresh starts, makes people closer, and fills the air with joy.
